LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College swim team (1-3, 1-2 ODAC) split tonight's tri-meet against Hollins University and the Randolph College WildCats with a 109-102 victory over Hollins and a 156-73 defeat against Randolph.
The Vixens started the meet off with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The relay team of junior
Viya Atambayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and first-years
Ella Scherrer (Simpsonville, S.C.),
Isabella Vermooten (Lawrence, Kan.) and
Abby Place (Lynchburg, Va.) combined for a time of 3:11.46.
Junior
Acadia ElzHowe (Georgetown, Texas) earned her first victory of the season thanks to a time of 11:59.33 in the 1000-yard freestyle. Fellow junior
Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) placed third with a time of 13:17.44.
In the 200-yard freestyle senior
Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.) claimed second after finishing the race in 2:12.71. Meanwhile, Atambayeva placed fifth in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.75 as the lone Vixens representative.
Both Aparicio and Scherrer competed in the 50-yard breaststroke and placed third and fifth, respectively, with times of 40.42 and 42.23.
ElzHowe followed that race up with her second victory of the night in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:10.10 beating out both of her WildCat competitors.
In a robust 50-yard freestyle field and her first individual collegiate race, Place came third with a time of 31.56.
Scherrer and Atambayeva secured fourth and seventh place in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:09.69 and 1:41.06, respectively.
Carpenter earned her second runner-up finish with a time of 1:09.53 in the 100-yard backstroke while Aparicio earned third and Vermooten fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a times of 1:28.18 and 2:04.02, respectively.
A third second-place finish for Carpenter came in the 500-yard freestyle which was completed in 5:57.20.
Vermooten would come fourth in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 58.82 and ElzHowe wrapped up individual races with a second-place 2:42.51 performance in the 200-yard IM.
Sweet Briar closed out the meet with second-place in the 400-yard freestyle relay thanks to Scherrer, Aparicio, Carpenter and ElzHowe's combined time of 4:19.67.
Highlights
- Tonight marked the first collegiate races for Atambayeva and Scherrer in the 50-yard backstroke and the 50-yard breaststroke.
- Vermooten also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard butterfly for the first time collegiately.
- Atambayeva secured a new personal best in the 100-yard freestyle.
- Sweet Briar increases its win streak against Hollins to five-straight meets while the Vixens totaled the smallest margin against the WildCats since at least the 2018 season.
