SALEM, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (5-6, 1-2) fell to the Roanoke College Maroons (5-4, 3-0) on the road today by a score of 3-1.
The Maroons got out to an early 1-0 lead after tallying the first goal of the game at the 3:19 mark.
An additional goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter increased their lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
Roanoke would extend its lead to three before the Vixens got on the board a little over a minute later.
Junior
Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) found senior
Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) in the final minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead back down to two.
A scoreless fourth quarter of play would bring the game to its 3-1 close.
In goal, junior goalkeeper
Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) recorded five saves.
Highlights
- Jones now leads the team with six goals so far this season.
- McCarthy recorded her second assist of the season.
What's Next
The Vixens will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Oct. 11 before returning to Thayer Field to take on Bridgewater on Oct. 14.
