SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College swim team (0-2, 0-1 ODAC) fell to the Roanoke College Maroons (1-0, 1-0 ODAC)), 146-44, and the Southern Virginia University Knights (1-0), 109-77 today at the Prothro Natatorium.
The Vixens started off the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-meter medley relay. The team's time of 2:28.29 placed them ahead of Southern Virginia's only relay team in the race.
Senior
Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.) and junior
Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) finished back-to-back in the 800-meter freestyle. Carpenter placed fourth with a time of 10:49.65 while Aparicio came fifth in 12:00.89.
Junior
Acadia ElzHowe (Georgetown, Texas) earned the best finish for Sweet Briar on the day when she came second in the 200-meter freestyle. ElzHowe's time of 2:18.52 was just under a second behind the first-place finisher from Roanoke.
Three Vixens saw action in the 50-meter freestyle. Junior
Mary Catherine Warner (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed fifth with a time of 30.40, followed by first-year
Jules Elliott (Norfolk, Va.) who clocked in a time of 45.55. Fellow first-year
Viya Atambayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) completed her exhibition race in 54.53.
In the 200-meter IM, junior
Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) completed the race in 3:00.74 as the lone Vixen competing.
ElzHowe and Vermooten placed fourth and sixth in the 100-meter butterfly with times of 1:16.69 and 2:32.64, respectively.
Warner captured another fifth-place finish in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:12.00. The Virginia native was followed by first-year
Ella Scherrer (Simpsonville, S.C.) in sixth with a time of 1:19.90 while Atambayeva earned a time of 2:00.19 in her exhibition.
Carpenter saw a top-three finish in the 100-meter backstroke thanks to her time of 1:17.64 while Elliott rounded out the field in sixth with a time of 2:10.47.
In the 400-meter freestyle, ElzHowe came fourth while Aparicio placed fifth with times of 5:11.38 and 5:47.00, respectively.
Lewis beat out all of her Southern Virginia competitors in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:28.41 and a third-place finish.
Sweet Briar concluded the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle relay; wrapping up the event in 2:48.93.
Highlights
- Carpenter recorded a new personal-best time in the 800-meter freestyle.
- The Vixens earned 24 more points against Southern Virginia than when the two teams met last season.

The team will head to Randolph to take on the WildCats and Hollins on Oct. 27.
