Softball Finds Its Game Against Southern Virginia

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (0-8) found its game at the plate today against Southern Virginia (3-1, 0-0 USA South), falling in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 12-0 (5 Innings) and 7-6.
 
Game One
The Knights were an unstoppable offensive powerhouse in game one, totaling one run in the first, three in the third and eight in the fourth to bring the game to an early 12-0 close after the fifth inning.
 
First-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) faced 21 batters as the starting pitcher and gave up zero walks. She forced seven flyouts and two groundouts during her time at the mound.
 
Coming into the game in relief, first-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) faced 10 batters and recorded two flyouts and one ground out.
 
First-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) led the team with two hits, recording one double while fellow first-year Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) also recorded a double in the game.
 
Game Two
The Vixens found their footing at the plate, flipping the script on Southern Virginia during the first three innings of play.
 
After the Knights took the lead 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Sweet Briar answered back with a run of their own. First-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) recorded an RBI after sending fellow first-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) across home plate.
 
The Vixens broke through after a scoreless second inning with five runs. Hudson tripled to send first-year Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.) home followed by a single from Smith to have Hudson score.
 
First-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and Smith would score off a single from first-year Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.). Sweet Briar earned its sixth run thanks to an RBI double from Kuleba to send Jamerson home.
 
However, the Knights would mount a comeback in the next two innings, tallying four runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to take the game back 7-6.
 
Smith started the game at the mound and faced 26 batters while recording zero walks and forcing eight flyouts and five ground outs.
 
In relief, Patrick faced six batters, recorded no walks and forced four flyouts and a ground out.
 
Hudson led the team once again with three hits while recording a triple. Hudson also recorded a double along with first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.), Kuleba and Rees.
 
Both Smith and Jamerson totaled two RBIs during the game.
 
Highlights
  • Hudson now leads the team with a .476 batting average.
  • Smith has pitched the most innings for Sweet Briar so far this season with a total of 17.2 while also being second on the team with a .364 batting average.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will face Theil and Northern Vermont-Johnson on Sunday, March 5 in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
