Tennis Takes Down Shenandoah, Lynchburg

WINCEHSTER, Va./SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (2-2, 2-0 ODAC) took home wins in both its matches today by beating Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponents Shenandoah (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) on the road and Lynchburg (2-3, 1-2 ODAC) at home by scores of 7-2 and 9-0, respectively.
 
The Vixens earned two out of three doubles points in Winchester thanks to de Souza/Wandling's 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot and Kotany/Guilarte's 8-0 sweep at the No. 2 spot.
 
In singles play, both seniors Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned one clean set during their matches with set scores of 6-0, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
 
Fellow senior Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) reigned victorious over Kelly Hudak at the No. 3 position by scores of 6-3, 6-3 while junior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Lily Kimble at the No. 4 slot.
 
First-year Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) would also win her match by scores of 7-5, 6-1.
 
In action at home, Sweet Briar got out to a quick 3-0 lead with doubles wins from Patino/Andrade over E. Teefey/G. Teefey, 6-8, Simhambhatla/Caro over Hair/Karrass, 8-1, and Bestwick/Chen over Hardesty/Jordan, 8-2.
 
The Vixens kept the Hornets off the scoresheet in singles as well earning the clean sweep. Sophomore Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) took down Elizabeth Teefey, 7-5, 7-6(7-5), at the No. 1 position while senior Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) saw action at the No. 2 slot and defeated Ashley Hair, 6-1, 6-3.
 
Senior Nikhita Simhabhatla (Hyderabad, Telangana, India), sophomore Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) and first-year Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) all saw sets where they never lost more than one game.
 
Simhambhatla earned her victory by set scores of 6-1, 6-0 while Caro and Bovard took home wins by scores of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 7-5, respectively.
 
First-year Isa Chen (Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil) got her first collegiate singles victory of the dual season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Reese McAtee.
