Tennis Falls to No. 21 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (5-3, 2-0 ODAC) fell to the No. 21 Mary Washington Eagles (3-3, 0-0 C2C) on the road today by a score of 9-0.
 
The Vixens fell behind early after the conclusion of doubles play. At the No. 1 doubles flight, the pairing of de Souza/Wandling fell to Hagino/Kimmey by a score 8-5. Andrade/Patino faced off against Moghtader/Stepleman at the No. spot while Caro/Simhambhatla saw action in the third doubles slot against Beckner/Smith.
 
Andrade/Patino saw their match play out to a set score of 8-5 in favor of the home team while Caro/Simhambhatla earned four games in their match for a loss of 8-4.
 
Junior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) bought up a fight at the No. 6 singles position against Riley Smith. She came back from a 6-1 first set loss to take the second set 7-6(7-4) before falling 10-5 in the third set tiebreaker.
 
Senior Allison Wandling also saw some extra action in her No. 3 singles match; falling to Hana Kimmey by scores of 7-5, 6-2.
 
Fellow seniors Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil), Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) and Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) saw action at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively. de Souza fell to Abby Moghtader by scores of 6-2, 6-0, Kotany to Rebecca Stepleman, 6-2, 6-2 and Andrade to Emily Beckner, 6-1, 6-3.
 
Sophomore Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) faced off against Amanda Hagino at the No. 2 slot in a 6-1, 6-1 loss.
 
Highlights
  • The Vixens have gone 3-1 in their four matches over the past week.
  • Since last playing the Eagles during the 2020-21 season, Sweet Briar has won eight more games in doubles and 17 singles. 
What's Next
The Vixens will be back at home on Saturday, March 18 against Birmingham Southern and Virginia Wesleyan and on Sunday, March 19 against Ferrum at home and Roanoke on the road.
