Softball Concludes Spring Break with Two Wins

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-9) concluded its spring break trip today with a 7-5 win over the Fitchburg State Falcons (0-6, 0-0 MASCAC) and a 5-4 victory over the Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions (1-2, 0-0 PSUAC).

The Vixens and Falcons were  evenly match for most of the game with both teams getting on the board with two runs scored in the second inning.
 
 First-year Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) earned an RBI with a single up the middle that allowed first-year Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.) to score. First-year Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) then brought O'Quinn home with a triple to centerfield.
 
Sweet Briar pulled ahead in the fifth inning thanks to a double from Hudson, followed by a triple from first-year Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) who then would go on to score off a wild pitch for the 5-2 lead.
 
Fitchburg State would attempt a comeback in the bottom of the fifth and six innings with a combined three runs score to even the score out at five. However, a bunt from first-year Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) that led to an error for Hudson to score and a sacrifice fly from first-year Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) to allow for first-year Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) to score would give the Vixens the 7-5 lead.
 
First-year Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) held strong at the mound to keep the Falcons off the scorecard in the bottom of the seventh and earn the victory for Sweet Briar.
 
Pisenti pitched all seven innings and faced a total of 33 batters during her time at the mound. She earned six strikeouts and forced nine flyouts and five groundouts.
 
Hudson led the team with two RBIs and four hits while also recording one double and a triple. Jamerson also recorded one triple and Rees earned the team's second double of the game.

The Vixens continues the momentum from earlier in the day into game two against the Roaring Lions; scoring the first four runs of the game.
 
A ground ball in the infield from Tew would allow Hudson to score for the 1-0 lead after the first and an additional run would be tacked on in the third by Tew after her fly ball to center field allowed Hudson to once against cross home plate.
 
In the fourth inning, both Williams and first-year Brooke Patrick (Chesapeake, Va.) would score off balls hit to center field from Rees and first-year Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.), respectively.
 
With Sweet Briar holding the 4-0 lead entering the sixth inning, Penn State Fayette found their footing at the plate and mounted a comeback with a three-run inning to come within one.
 
An additional run by the Roaring Lions in would tie the game up with the Vixens heading to the plate at the bottom of the seventh.
 
Smith would get the walk-off hit for Sweet Briar after her sacrifice fly to right field allowed Kuleba to score for the 5-4 victory.
 
Both Patrick and Pisenti spent time at the mound with Patrick getting the start and Pisenti recording the save. Patrick faced 25 batters through 5.2 innings and struck out three, gave up zero walks and forced 11 flyouts and one ground out.
 
Through her 1.1 innings, Pisenti earned one strike out, gave up zero walks and forced two flyouts and one ground out.
 
Hudson one again led the Vixens at the plate after recording two hits and two runs, as well as one double.
 
Smith, Tew, Rees and Kuleba all recorded one RBI.
 
Highlights
  • Jamerson has now totaled three triples so far this season and now ranks seventh in the nation in total triples recorded.
  • With two triples earned today, Sweet Briar now ranks tied for fifth in most triples recorded so far this season.
  • Hudson currently leads the team with a .577 batting average.
What's Next
The Vixens will head to Ferrum and Bridgewater next week for doubleheaders on Wednesday, March 15 and Saturday, March 18, respectively.
