WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (12-22) took down the Salem College Spirit (4-24, 1-13 USA South) in both games in today's doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 3-0.
Game One
First-year
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) got things going in her very first at-bat with a home run to left field to put the Vixens up 1-0.
Fellow first-year
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) earned the Vixens another tally as she scored on a ball put in place by first-year
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and an ensuing throwing error from the Spirits.
The home team would answer with a run of their own to close out the action in the first inning and bring the score to 2-1.
Hudson's second RBI of the game in the second inning and a home run from first-year
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) increased Sweet Briar's lead to 4-1.
After Salem tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth, the Vixens' answered back with a six-run inning in the sixth.
Two of the team's runs came from walks while doubles from William and Tew brought the score up to 8-2.
A passed ball late in the sixth would allow for Tew and Williams to cross home plate and give Sweet Briar the 10-2 victory after six innings.
First-year
Grace Pisenti (Madison Heights, Va.) got the win at the mound after pitching all six innings. Pisenti faced a total of 24 batters, struck out five and forced 10 flyouts and three groundouts.
At the plate, both Hudson and Tew recorded two RBIs while Jamerson led the team with three hits.
Game Two
Game two of the doubleheader was a much more low scoring affair compared to game one.
The Vixens' three runs, to earn them the 3-0 victory, all came in the fifth inning. Hudson doubled to right field to send first-year
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) home while Tew recorded an infield single to allow for runs scored by Williams and Hudson.
Pisenti once against saw game two through from start to finish; giving up zero walks and striking out six after facing 25 batters.
Hudson and Tew again led the team in RBIs with one each while Hudson recorded three hits in the game to lead the team.
Highlights
- Pisenti only gave up three hits in game two while recording the first shutout since Sweet Briar defeated Trinity (D.C.) 28-0 on March 14, 2015.
- The Vixens have won both games in the doubleheader for the first time since the team took on Trinity (D.C.) on April 3, 2016.
- Hudson and Jamerson's home runs in game one mark the first time since April 9, 2015, that the team has hit two home runs in a single game.
What's Next
The Vixens will close out the season at Shenandoah on Saturday, April 29.
