SALEM, Va. - The Sweet Briar College swim team (2-8) kicked off action in 2024 against the Roanoke College Maroons (5-1), falling to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponents 185-55.
In the first race of the new year, the 200-yard medley relay, senior
Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.), first-year
Ella Scherrer (Simpsonville, S.C.), junior
Mary Catherine Warner (Virginia Beach, Va.) and first-year
Amara Clancey (Harrisonburg, Va.) placed third with a time of 2:15.38.
Junior
Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) secured another third-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle thanks to her time of 13:18.61.
As the lone Vixen competitor in the 200-yard freestyle, first-year
Jules Elliott (Norfolk, Va.) recorded a time of 3:30.23 in third place.
Carpenter took home the Vixens' lone victory of the night thanks to her time of 1:10.16 in the 100-yard backstroke while first-year
Rue Pomeroy (Scottsville, Va.) earned a time of 2:12.63 in her first race as a member of the team.
Junior
Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.), Clancey and Scherrer all saw action in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed second, fourth and fifth with times of 1:15.99, 1:28.08 and 1:33.28, respectively.
Fourth through seventh place of the 50-yard freestyle were occupied by Sweet Briar thank to Aparicio, Clancey, Elliott and Pomeroy. Aparicio recorded a time of 30.82, Clancey finished the race in 31.22, Elliott touched the wall at the 42.70 and Pomeroy saw her race finish in a time of 59.23.
Warner, Carpenter and
Viya Atambayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) finished back-to-back-to-back in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:02.59, 1:03.36 and 1:46.00, respectively.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Elliott would place third with a time of 3:57.33 while Lewis would claim fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:47.73 followed by Clancey in fifth with a finish at the 3:18.72 mark.
Carpenter went on to record another top-three finish for the Vixens in the 500-yard freestyle thanks to her time of 6:06.65. She was followed by Scherrer at the wall at the 7:00.73 mark.
Warner placed third in the 100-yard butterfly after completing the event in 1:12.62. Lewis followed that performance up with a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard IM.
In the final event of the day, the Vixens placed fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay thanks to Aparicio, Lewis, Warner and Scherrer's combined time of 4:28.42.
Highlights
- Sweet Briar gained 12 points on Roanoke from the two team's last meeting.
- Both Clancey and Pomeroy competed in the first collegiate meet today.
- Elliott saw action in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke for the first time.
