Tennis Sees Success at Methodist Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team had a successful two days at the Methodist Invite, racking up a total of 19 victories.
 
In doubles competition, the duo of Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) and Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) were crowned champions of flight two. Caro/I. Guilarte earned victories against Battermann/Sultanova of Old Dominion Athletic Conference rivals Averett, Hulicki/Subirats of Methodist and Pascual/Zaratiegui of Division II Barton College to take the crown.
 
The pairing of Bovard/Minton also advanced to the final of flight three, west bracket thanks to a 6-2 win against Nhouyvanisvong/Sizemore of Guilford.
 
In doubles action at the top flight, A. Guilarte/Patino earned a 6-4 victory over Fernandez/Saez of Barton while Caracciolo/Lima secured a 7-6 (7-3) win against Carmona Garcia/Pita of Barton in the flight two west semifinals.
 
Bestwick/Cope competed in round robin action in flight four taking victories against Parker/Willocks of Methodist and Soto/Ward of Guilford by scores of 6-1 and 7-6 (7-2), respectively.
 
In singles play, senior Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) competed in flight one and earned a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Siddhi Khandelwal of Averett in the west semifinals.
 
Fellow senior Caro took down Annabelle Subirats of Averett, 6-4, 6-2, in the flight three west semifinals before taking the finals match by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3) against Brenda Poulakidas of Averett.
 
Junior Alexandra Guilarte claimed a victory in the flight three south bracket thanks to a score of 6-1, 6-2 against Subirats.
 
Flight four action saw sophomore Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) advance to the finals of the west draw after a three-set 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-4) win over Osenyonye Nwokolo of Barton while fellow sophomore Isadora Lima took down Jolie Nhouyvanisvong of Guilford, 6-0, 6-0 in the flight five south draw.
 
Additional victories in the flight six west draw semifinals were earned by junior Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) and sophomore Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) over Chandler Sizemore and Amy Soto of Guilford, respectively.
 
Junior Atty Bestwick rounded out competition for Sweet Briar with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Bethany Lupo of Guilford to open up action in the flight seven east quarterfinals.
 
Highlights
  • Sweet Briar earned the sportsmanship award at the tournament.
  • The doubles team of Caro/I. Guilarte remains undefeated in tournament play with a 10-0 record.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will look to add one more tournament to the schedule to close out the fall season.
