Tennis Earns Season-Opening Sweeps Over Ferrum, Lynchburg

FERRUM, Va. / LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College (2-0, 2-0 ODAC) kicked off the spring season with 9-0 sweeps on the road against the Ferrum College Panthers (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) and the University of Lynchburg Hornets (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) today.
 
The Vixens started the day off at Ferrum as the doubles pairings of Bestwick/van Eekelen and Booth/Jones both earned perfect 8-0 victories in their matches.
 
The duo of Caracciolo/Caro got the 8-1 victory over Huffman/Mendoza at the No. 1 doubles spot.
 
In singles action, senior Avery Jones (Union, Conn.), sophomore Atty Bestwick (Durham, N.C.) and first-years Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) and Guusje van Eekelen (Heeze, Netherlands) all were perfect with 6-0, 6-0 wins at the No. 5, No. 6, No. 4, No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively.
 
Junior Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) helped Sweet Briar remain perfect with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Morgan Hundley.
 
The momentum continued into the late afternoon against Lynchburg with the doubles team of Lima/Minton taking down Horine/McAtee 8-1 while both A. Guilatre/Patino and Bovard/I. Guilarte earned 8-3 victories in their doubles matches.
 
Junior Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) opened up her spring season with a 6-0, 6-0 takedown of Ashley Hair at the No. 2 slot while first-year Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) also left with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Elizabeth Horine at the No. 6 position.
 
Senior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) kicked off her final spring campaign with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 singles position while her sister Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) got the 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
 
Both first-year Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) and sophomore Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) took the 6-1 win in their first sets while second-set victories were secured by scores of 6-0 and 6-3, respectively.
 
Highlights
  • Booth, Caracciolo, Lima, Minton and van Eekelen all earned straight-set victories in their first career dual singles matches.
  • Minton extends her undefeated streak from the fall season as she improves to 6-0 in singles play.
