Softball Falls to Marymount in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (1-3, 0-0 ODAC) fell to the Marymount University Saints (2-2, 0-0 AEC) by scores of 8-0 and 12-4 at the Nationals Youth Academy today.

Game One
First-year pitcher Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) held the Saints scoreless in the first two innings of play before the home team got a run on the board in the bottom of the third.

Seven additional runs scored by Marymount in the eighth brought the game to its early 8-0 close.

Despite the loss, Taylor struck out a career high eight batters while sophomore Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) came in to record one strikeout and the final two outs of the game.

Both sophomores Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) and Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) recorded hits for the Vixens.

Game Two
Sweet Briar's offense came alive in the second game of the doubleheader as homeruns from first-years Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) and Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) gave the team a 2-0 lead after the top of the second.

However, Marymount would answer with 11 runs of their own over the next two innings to take the 11-2 lead.

A single from Smith scoring sophomore Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) and a wild pitch that sent first-year Emily Roberts (Walkertown, N.C.) across home plate cut the Saints' lead to seven.

Marymount's lone run in the bottom of the fifth once again cut the game short; giving the home  team the 12-4 victory after five innings.

Sophomore Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) got the start in game two and recorded three flyouts and six groundouts. Taylor saw one inning of action and struck out two.

At first base, Tew recorded a team-high four putouts.

Highlights
  • Game one catcher Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) led the team with nine putouts.
  • Today marked the first career homerun for both Dorrier and Martin.
  • Sweet Briar currently leads the nation in home runs per game with an average of 1.00.
