MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-5, 0-0 ODAC) went undefeated today as the team took down the Thiel College Tomcats (1-3, 0-0 PAC) 7-2 and the Clarks Summit University Defenders (2-1-1, 0-0 UEC) 5-1.
Game One
The Vixens set the tone early in game one of the day with sophomore
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) scoring on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.
Despite the Tomcats tying the game up in the next half inning, first-year
Jordan Martin's (Wilmington, N.C.) triple would swing the lead back to Sweet Briar with the score at 4-1.
Thiel scored an additional run in the bottom of the fourth while a scoreless fifth inning brought the game to 4-2 heading into the sixth.
A sacrifice fly from first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) increased the team's lead to three runs and an eighth-inning triple from Hudson and a single from sophomore
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) concluded the game at 7-2.
In the circle, sophomore
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) earned her first win of the season after pitching 3.2 innings while Taylor came in to strike out seven and earn her first career save.
Offensively, Hudson led the team with three RBIs while both she and Dorrier recorded three hits. First-year
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) led all field players with a total of 10 putouts.
Game Two
It took three innings for Sweet Briar's bats to warm up in game two as Hudson's third-inning single marked the end of the scoreless game.
Both Martin and sophomore
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) crossed home plate on the play to the Vixens to go up 2-0.
Clarks Summit only run of the game came immediately following in the bottom of the third, however, Sweet Briar maintained a comfortable lead thanks to three additional runs scored in the fifth.
A fielding error led to both Hudson and Martin scoring while a single from Smith brought Jamerson home for the 5-1 victory.
Taylor pitched a complete game and notched her fourth win of the season while recording ten strikeouts. Nauful once again led the team in putouts, this time totaling 11.
Highlights
- Nauful's 11 putouts against the Defenders marks a new career high.
- Taylor recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in game two to put her season total at 47 which places her ninth nationally and first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
- Both Hudson and Martin now have a .500 or better batting average.
What's Next
The Vixens will head to Mary Baldwin on March 20th before opening up conference play with back-to-back doubleheaders at Lynchburg and against Ferrum on March 23rd and 24th.
