Lacrosse Gets First Win of the Season Over N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team (1-2) earned its first win of the season this afternoon as the team took down the North Carolina Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (0-4, 0-0 USA South) 9-8.

Despite the home team getting on the board first, the Vixens battled back with two goals from sophomore Victoria Schofield (Towson, Md.) and a tally from junior Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) to take the 3-1 lead following the conclusion of the first quarter.

Both Sweet Briar and N.C. Wesleyan found the back of the net twice in the second, with Sweet Briar's goals coming courtesy of Cleaves and Schofield, to bring the score to 5-3 entering halftime.

A low-scoring third quarter with only one goal by either team gave way to an eventful seven-goal fourth quarter of play.

Schofield tallied her fifth of the game on a woman-up opportunity less than two minutes into play followed by sophomore Ashley Prevet's (Nesconset, N.Y.) first of the season at the 11:56 mark to put the Vixens up 8-4.

Despite a late push by the home team, Prevet's second of the day with a little over five minutes remaining would be the insurance goal needed to take the 9-8 victory.

Schofield also led the team defensively with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

In goal, senior Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) registered six saves.

Highlights
  • Today's victory marked the first in Head Coach Bucky Morris' tenure.
  • Schofield recorded her highest single-game goal total and the team's highest single-game goal total since an 11-16 loss against Warren Wilson on March 25, 2023.
