Softball Comes Up Short Against Ferrum

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (7-10, 0-4 ODAC) came up short in today's doubleheader against the Ferrum College Panthers (4-14, 2-0 ODAC) falling in game one 10-0 and in game two 3-2.
 
Game One
A scoreless first inning gave way to a five-run top of the second outing for the Panthers.
 
The visiting team would tack on two more runs in the fourth and three more in the seventh while holding the Vixens scoreless to take the 10-0 victory.
 
First-year Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) who got the start In the circle completed 1.1 innings of action and struck out four batters. Sophomore Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) also notched four strikeouts during her five innings of action while first-year Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) brought the game to its conclusion with 0.2 innings recorded.
 
Sophomores Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and first-year Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) led the team with two hits. Both of Hudson and Dorrier's hits were doubles.
 
Defensively, sophomore first baseman Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) and first-year catcher Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) totaled eight putouts.
 
Game Two
The second game of the day was a much closer affair for both teams.
 
The first two innings were scoreless before Ferrum once again got on the board first in the top of the third with two runs.
 
The Vixens answered back with a pair of runs of their own thanks to a single from Hudson and a double from Taylor.
 
The visitors scored an additional run in the bottom fifth to take the eventual 3-2 victory.
 
Sophomore Ana Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) struck out four batters through 2.1 innings of work as she got the start in the circle. Taylor tallied six strikeouts of her own through 4.2 innings.
 
Hudson was once again one of the best performers offensively for Sweet Briar; leading the team with two hits and one RBI while recording her second double of the day. Taylor and sophomore Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) also hit doubles to bring the team's total to three in game two.
 
Nauful totaled 11 putouts to lead that of any field player.

  • The Vixens recorded three doubles in a single game for the second this season.
  • Nauful's 11 put-outs in game two ties her career high.
