RALEIGH, N.C. - The Sweet Briar College softball team (4-4, 0-0 ODAC) split today's doubleheader against the Meredith College Avenging Angels (5-3, 0-0 USA South) after winning game one, 5-2, and dropping game two, 2-9.
Game One
With only three hits recorded by the two teams combined in the first two innings, the Vixens offense started to heat up in the top third.
Sophomore
Kaylie Hudson's (Lynchburg, Va.) second homerun of the season put the Vixens up 3-0.
Sweet Briar answered Meredith's own run in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own in the fifth. A single from sophomore
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and a sacrifice fly to right field by first-year
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) helped the team increase its lead to four.
That lead would hold through the rest of the game as the Avenging Angels only managed an additional run in the bottom of the seventh to conclude the game at 5-2.
First-year pitcher
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) saw all seven innings of action. Taylor struck out seven batters while only allowing one earned run.
Defensively, first-year
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) led the team with seven putouts while sophomore
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) recorded three assists.
Game Two
The Vixens got off to a quick start in game two; scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a double from Smith.
The home team would answer back, however, scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, fourth and fifth innings to take the 9-2 victory.
Sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) got the start for Sweet Briar and saw three innings of action while first-year
Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) completed the rest of the game.
Smith led the team at the plate with her two RBIs and Hudson totaled two hits for the team lead in that statistical category.
Sophomore first baseman
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) recorded seven putouts in game two, her highest total of the day.
Highlights
- Taylor now has 25 strikeouts this season to sit second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
- Hudson leads the conference in RBIs with 12 while being the runner-up in runs scored (11) and hits (13).
