SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (10-17, 3-11 ODAC) fell in both games of today's doubleheader against the Shenandoah University Hornets (10-14, 2-8) by scores of 11-5 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
Game One
The Hornets went ahead early with a run scored on a fielder's choice play.
However, the Vixens would tie things up in the bottom of the third when first-year
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) hit her second home run of the season.
Two tallies from the Hornets in the top of the fourth were answered with a single from sophomore
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) scoring fellow sophomore
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) bringing home sophomore
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.).
Shenandoah began to pull away in the fifth inning with four runs coming across home plate for the 7-3 lead.
A sacrifice fly to center field from Tew brought home first-year
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) to cut the visitor's lead to three.
Four more runs from the Hornets in the sixth gave the team the eventual 11-5 victory following a sacrifice fly, this time from sophomore
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.), brought Sweet Briar to five runs.
Sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) and first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) both saw action in the circle. O'Quinn got the start and lasted 2.1 innings while Taylor struck out seven in her 4.2 innings of action.
At the plate, Martin, Taylor and Tew all recorded two hits earning a triple to center field in the bottom of the seventh.
First-year catcher
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) led the team defensively with seven putouts.
Game Two
Game two of the doubleheader saw the first inning go scoreless before sophomore
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) stole home and first-year
Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) recorded an RBI single to right field to put the Vixens up 2-0.
The Hornets, however, fired up the bats in the following inning with four runs scored.
With the rest of the game going scoreless, Shenandoah took home the game-two victory as well by a score of 4-2.
Smith saw two innings of action in her start while Taylor came in and struck out two through the final five.
Six Vixens recorded hits while Staton's RBI was the lone one recorded and Williams led the team with seven put outs.
Highlights
- Jamerson stole a career-high four bases in game two.
- Martin now ranks second on the team with three triples so far this season.
