VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-25, 4-18 ODAC) closed out its 2024 season today against the No. 13 Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins (30-7, 20-2 ODAC). Both games of the doubleheader concluded after five innings with the Vixens falling by a score of 12-0 in game one and 16-4 in game two.
Game One
The Marlins started the game off with their bats hot, scoring four runs in the first inning of play.
The home team tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the second and two more in the third to go ahead 7-0.
Virginia Wesleyan then increased its lead even further with a five-run fourth inning to close out the game 12-0 following the completion of the top of the fifth.
Sophomore
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) got the start in the circle for Sweet Briar and saw two innings of action while first-year
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) and fellow sophomore
Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) both saw one each.
At the plate, the team was led by Smith and first-years
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) and
Emily Roberts (Walkertown, N.C.) who all recorded one hit.
Sophomore first baseman
Kaydin Williams earned seven putouts.
Game Two
The Vixens bounced back in game two score the first one of the game as sophomore
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) stole home.
However, the Marlins answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to increase its run total with five runs scored in the second and eight in the third before Sweet Briar got on the board again.
First-year
Lacey Steppe (Charlotte County, Va.) recorded an RBI as her grounder to third base sent Smith home to bring the score to 16-2 following the fourth inning.
Two more runs were scored by the Vixens in the fifth as both sophomore
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, N.C.) and first-year
Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) crossed home on wild pitches. The game concluded following the fifth inning with the score at 16-4.
Steppe led the team with her RBI while Hudson and sophomore
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) both had one hit.
Williams once again led the team with putouts, totaling five in game two.
Highlights
- Williams' seven putouts in game one was the most out of any field player on either team.
- Four runs is the most scored by Sweet Briar in a single game against Virginia Wesleyan since the 2007 season.
