Tennis Advances to ODAC Semifinals with Win Over Roanoke

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The No. 3-seed Sweet Briar College tennis team (18-3, 8-2 ODAC) took down the No. 6-seed Roanoke College Maroons (8-12, 5-5 ODAC) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinals this afternoon, 5-0, to advance to the semifinals in Virginia Beach, Va.
 
The Vixens went ahead early as all three doubles teams won their matches by scores of 8-1.
 
The duo of Caracciolo/van Eekelen were the first to capture a victory for Sweet Briar with their win over Breedlove/Wright at No. 3 doubles.
 
At No. 1 singles, A. Guilarte/Patino took down Bassett/Fernstrum to collect the third point of the day while Caro/I. Guilarte took care of Rios/Streibich at the No. 2 spot to put the team ahead 3-0.
 
Increasing the Vixens' lead even further was first-year Juli Caracciolo (Los Cardales, Argentina) who earned a sweeping 6-0, 6-0 victory over Camryn Breedlove at No. 5 singles.
 
Fellow first-year Isadora Lima (Natal, Brazil) clinched the semifinal berth thanks to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Sidney Wright at No. 6.
 
Highlights
  • Junior Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia), senior Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela), junior Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) and sophomore Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) all had already won their first sets when the match was called.
  • Both Caracciolo and Lima improved upon their performances against the same singles opponents from earlier in the season.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will face off against No. 2 seed/No. 44 Averett on Saturday at 4 p.m.
