Soccer Bested by Salem College

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College Vixens (2-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) were bested by the Salem College Spirits (4-2-0, 0-0-0), 5-2, in the first night game of the season at Meyer Field.

The Vixens got on the board first less than 10 minutes into the game when a free kick from senior Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) found its way past the Spirits goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

However, three goals from the visitors in the final 15 minutes of the first half gave them the 3-1 lead at the break.

Salem added two more goals to its total before a tally from sophomore Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) with just under two minutes remaining brought the score to 5-2.

In goal, senior Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) recorded a season-high 12 saves.

Highlights
  • First-year Maddie Ickes (Powhatan, Va.) earned the assist on Diaz's goal.
  • Tonight's matchup marks the first time since 2006 that Sweet Briar has scored against Salem.
