SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College Vixens (2-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) were bested by the Salem College Spirits (4-2-0, 0-0-0), 5-2, in the first night game of the season at Meyer Field.
The Vixens got on the board first less than 10 minutes into the game when a free kick from senior
Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) found its way past the Spirits goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
However, three goals from the visitors in the final 15 minutes of the first half gave them the 3-1 lead at the break.
Salem added two more goals to its total before a tally from sophomore
Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) with just under two minutes remaining brought the score to 5-2.
In goal, senior
Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) recorded a season-high 12 saves.
Highlights
- First-year Maddie Ickes (Powhatan, Va.) earned the assist on Diaz's goal.
- Tonight's matchup marks the first time since 2006 that Sweet Briar has scored against Salem.
What's Next
The Vixens will travel to Trinity Washington on Sept. 25th before opening up conference play at Roanoke on Sept. 28th.
