Field Hockey Faces Tough Road Clash with Roanoke

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (2-8, 0-4 ODAC) faced a tough matchup on the road this evening against the Roanoke Maroons (4-9, 2-2 ODAC). The Vixens fell to the Maroons by a score of 1-0, with a late goal from the home team to seal the victory.

In the opening quarter, Sweet Briar found itself under immediate pressure by Roanoke's offense. The Maroons unleashed six shots and earned several penalty corners, but sophomore Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) stood tall in the cage, making multiple key saves to keep the period scoreless.

The second quarter saw Sweet Briar begin to settle into its rhythm. The Vixens earned their first penalty corners of the game, both executed by first-year Lyla Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) Hart continued to anchor the back line with poise, collecting another save before halftime to keep the contest 0–0 at the break.

Momentum began to shift slightly in the third quarter, with Sweet Briar generating a few meaningful chances. Sophomore Gianna Guadagno (Huntington Beach, Calif.) registered a shot on goal midway through the period, forcing a save from the Maroons goalkeeper. The score remained even entering the final quarter.

The breakthrough came at the 54:37 mark of the fourth quarter, when Roanoke converted on a penalty corner, to put them ahead 1–0. Sweet Briar responded with urgency, earning two late penalty corners from sophomore Bella Perdue (Richmond, Va.), but was unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.
