Soccer Faces Adversity at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-9-0, 0-8-0 ODAC) faced adversity in its evening contest at the Bridgewater College Eagles (11-4-0, 5-3-0), falling by a score of 11-0 in the contest.

The opening half saw Bridgewater seize control early and ultimately put seven goals past the Sweet Briar defense by halftime. Sweet Briar's junior goalkeeper, Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.), had a busy 45 minutes, making crucial saves against a barrage of 20 shots as the Vixens struggled to keep Bridgewater away from goal. Efforts from the defensive line, anchored by sophomore Kaelin Hanson (Los Alamos, N.M.) and first-year Abby Broom (Sylva, N.C.), helped minimize damage as much as possible during repeated Bridgewater attacks. First-year Charity Tynes (Midlothian, Va.) saw substitute action while junior Emily Michel (Centennial, Colo.) managed to be involved in Sweet Briar's limited forward play.

After halftime, Sweet Briar continued to confront significant pressure from Bridgewater, who added four more goals to complete the 11-0 score line. Viccora continued her standout performance in net throughout all 90 minutes, adding two more saves for a total of five, demonstrating resilience despite the tough circumstances. In the midfield, junior Elise Bennett (Louisa, Va.) and sophomore Maddie Ickes (Powhatan, Va.) played the full match, working to transition play and support their teammates. Despite limited success on offense, the team's efforts to push forward and their determination through a challenging match were highlighted by the stamina and fighting spirit of all ten outfield players who completed the full game.

  • Sweet Briar held Bridgewater scoreless for the final 20 minutes of action in both halves.
