Soccer Taken Down by Randolph-Macon

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-5-0, 0-4-0 ODAC) was taken down by the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (5-4-2, 3-0-0 ODAC) this afternoon at Meyer Field by a score of 16-0.

In the opening 45 minutes, Randolph-Macon set the tone early, scoring its first goal just over three minutes into the match. Despite several solid saves from Sweet Briar junior goalkeeper Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.), the Vixens struggled to contain the Yellow Jackets' attack, eventually trailing 9-0 at halftime. Sweet Briar totaled four shots in the half, with junior Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) providing the brightest moments by creating two shots on goal. First-year Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) tallied Sweet Briar's first shot on target, and the Vixens' defensive line, anchored by sophomore Kaelin Hanson (Los Alamos, N.M.) and first-year Abby Broom (Sylva, N.C.), did their best to keep the high-volume attacks at bay. Viccora finished the half with an impressive ten saves, reflecting Randolph-Macon's offensive pressure.

The second half saw more of the same as Sweet Briar struggled to generate offensive opportunities as Randolph-Macon continued to press, adding seven more goals. Viccora continued her strong showing in goal with eight more saves, keeping the score line from growing even wider. Sophomore Grady O'Donnell (Richmond, Va.) and junior Elyse Samassekou (Huntington, W. Va.) saw time in the second half, providing energy off the bench, while Diaz continued to work hard in the midfield, attempting to spark a counterattack. Defensively, the starting back line, including Hanson and Broom, played the full 90 minutes and endured relentless pressure.

Highlights
  • Viccora registered a career-high 18 saves.
  • Diaz led the team in both shots and shots on goal.
