LEXINGTON, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-6-0, 0-5-0 ODAC) was downed by the No. 10/8 Washington and Lee University Generals (9-2-1, 5-0-0 ODAC) on the road today by a score of 12-0.
In the first half of play, Washington and Lee scored rapidly, finding the net nine times in the opening 45 minutes and keeping Sweet Briar largely pinned back defensively. Junior
Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) generated a shot on target for Sweet Briar in the first half, making a determined effort but was denied by the opposition goalkeeper. Junior goalkeeper
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) faced relentless pressure and recorded two key saves in the first half, helping prevent the deficit from growing even larger.
After halftime, Sweet Briar showed resilience and gradually settled into the match. The team tallied two shots in the second half, with Diaz and first-year
Sadie Swart (Bowie, Md.) testing the Generals' defense and forcing saves from the keeper. Despite conceding three more goals in the second frame, Sweet Briar's squad fought hard in midfield and defense, and Viccora added one more save to her total for the day.
Junior
Elise Bennett (Louisa, Va.) played a complete match, contributing effort and composure across both halves. Swart also stood out by registering a shot on target, reflecting Sweet Briar's determination to create opportunities even under pressure. Defenders sophomore
Kaelin Hanson (Los Alamos, N.M.) and first-year
Abby Broom (Sylva, N.C.) played full matches, helping anchor the team throughout all 90 minutes, and first-year
Charity Tynes (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore
Maddie Ickes (Powhatan, Va.) also demonstrated considerable endurance and resolve.
