SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (2-6, 0-2 ODAC) participated in the first Beard Cup against the Lynchburg Hornets (8-3, 1-0 ODAC), falling 13-0.
The game opened with Lynchburg applying early pressure, scoring twice in the first quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) made key interventions, registering blocks on back-to-back shots by Lynchburg to keep the deficit from growing further.
In the second quarter, Sweet Briar's defense continued to endure a barrage of shots as Lynchburg added six goals to their tally. Hart's defense continued to shine despite the offensive onslaught from the Hornets.
The third quarter saw first-year
Aurora Duffie (Gloucester, Va.) step in between the pipes for Sweet Briar, making five saves and stifling Lynchburg's attacks. The Vixens managed to generate some offensive momentum when junior
Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.) managed a shot on goal early in the final period, forcing Lynchburg's keeper into a save.
Despite the strong defense from the Vixens in the fourth quarter, Lynchburg closed out the game with two more goals.
