HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College volleyball team (0-13) was taken by the Eastern Mennonite University Royals (5-13, 1-3 ODAC) this evening in straight sets on the road by set scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-11.
Sweet Briar started with energy, but EMU quickly put distance on the scoreboard. First-year
Rachael Hunt (Willow Spring, N.C.) delivered a kill and contributed solid defensive work at the net, including a block assist with junior
Emily Roberts (Walkertown, N.C.) that helped stop a Royals attack momentarily. Sophomore
Mila Mutabdzija (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led Sweet Briar with a .333 hitting percentage in the first set, showing poise in finding open space with her attacks. Roberts also added a kill and kept defensive pressure, while fellow junior
Gracyn Wright (Rock Hill, S.C.) patrolled the back row and had a strong serve-receive night. Despite the Vixens' hustle, EMU capitalized on runs to close the set 25-11.
The second set saw Sweet Briar generating chances with quick transitions, as Hunt and Mutabdzija remained active offensively with attack attempts and earned points off blocks and kills. Wright continued to help stabilize passing, and Roberts chipped in with a block assist. Eastern Mennonite's efficiency and service aces pushed the score out of reach, ending the set at 25-8.
In the final set, Sweet Briar maintained defensive resilience with Roberts and Hunt working together for digs and blocks, highlighted by Hunt's crucial stops and blocks. Mutabdzija stayed aggressive, taking multiple swings and linking up with the setters for quick attacks. EMU kept control, however, and took the set 25-11.
Highlights
- Mutabdzija led the team in digs and kills.
- Roberts recorded her first career solo block while leading the team in block assists with three so far this season.
