MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (8-3, 0-0 ODAC) was victorious this morning over the Pennsylvania College of Technology Wildcats (5-4, 0-0 UEC), winning the game in the seventh inning by a score of 1-0.
The Vixens had a runner in scoring position early, with second base occupied with two outs in the top of the first.
In the second inning, the Wildcats were the scoring threat with a runner on second and two outs on the board. Sweet Briar would get out of the inning unscathed thanks to a fly ball caught by junior
Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) in right field.
The third inning saw sophomore
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) advance to third base after reaching first on a fielder's choice play, however, the game would remain deadlocked at zero without a runner in scoring position for either team until the seventh inning.
First-year
Grace Rokos (Jacksonville, N.C.) was the leadoff hitter on board after hitting a single to right field. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and was then moved to third off a hit from Jamerson.
Senior
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) brought the game-winning run home with a sacrifice bunt that allowed Rokos to score and give the Vixens the 1-0 lead.
With Penn College held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Sweet Briar came away with the victory in the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
Sophomore
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) spent all seven innings in the circle and recorded five strikeouts.
Both Rokos and sophomore
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) recorded hits with Tew getting the game-winning RBI.
Highlights
- Taylor recorded an earned run average (ERA) of 0.00 for the third-straight game.
- Today's RBI was Tew's team-leading seventh of the season.
