Softball Tripped Up by Roanoke

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (12-10, 1-5 ODAC) was tripped up by the Roanoke College Maroons (13-9, 4-2 ODAC) today, falling by a score of 5-4 in eight innings in game one and 7-1 in game two.

Game One
Both teams were evenly matched through the first pair of innings of the game with Roanoke tallying the first tun in the top of the third.

The Maroons then went on to tack three more runs to take the 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth where the Vixens mounted a comeback.

Senior Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.) got the scoring started when her hit to second base allowed sophomore Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) to cross home.

A single to center field from junior Lauren Jamerson (Buckingham, Va.) then scored first-year Emily Cottingham (Chesterfield, Va.) and junior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) to bring Sweet Briar within one.

Sophomore Ambyre Taylor's (Arrington, Va.) second-base single, which sent Jamerson home, tied the game at four.

With a scoreless seventh inning of action, the game went into extras and Roanoke capitalized on placing a runner on second to score the winning run.

Taylor got the start in the circle for the Vixens and struck out four and allowed only one earned run through 7.1 innings while junior Alyssa O'Quinn (Powhatan, Va.) recorded the final two outs.

At the plate, Jamerson led the team with her two RBIs.

Game Two
The Maroons got the bats heated up early in game two, tallying two runs in the first, four in the second and one in the third to go up 7-0.

Sweet Briar's only run of the game came from a sacrifice fly from first-year Leila Atienza (Jacksonville, N.C.) which scored fellow first-year Grace Rokos (Jacksonville, N.C.).

First-year Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) started the game and was followed in the circle by junior Ana Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) who struck out three and had no recorded earned runs through her 3.1 innings.

First-year Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) closed out the game for the Vixens and also struck out three through two innings.
Both Jamerson and Rokos recorded hits in game two.
