RALEIGH, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-3, 0-0 ODAC) faced its first road contest of the season this evening as the team traveled to the Meredith College Avenging Angels (4-1). The Vixens fell to the Avenging Angels 5-1 in the Tar Heel state.
The game's first goal came at 4:18 for Meredith. Defensively, Sweet Briar goalkeeper, first-year
Bella Cosden (Gettysburg, Pa.), recorded two saves to keep the deficit manageable, but the Vixens trailed 1-0 at the end of the quarter.
The Vixens faced seven shots and allowed another goal at 16:18 of the second quarter, which meant by halftime, Sweet Briar trailed 2-0.
Sweet Briar found a spark offensively in the third quarter, led by sophomore
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine). Meredith, however, remained consistent with four shots and scored again at 36:52. Sweet Briar's hard work paid off late in the period: at 42:45, as Hart scored the Vixens' only goal of the game off a pass from fellow sophomore
Elise Palazzo (Allentown, Pa.), cutting the deficit to 3-1 as the quarter ended. Defensively, Sweet Briar kept Meredith from extending the lead until the closing moments.
The final quarter saw Meredith put up two more goals—one at 45:57 and another at the final buzzer.
Highlights
- Tonight's tally marks the first career goal for Hart.
- Cosden registered four saves in her first collegiate start.
