Field Hockey Snags OT Win from Washington & Jefferson

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (1-3, 0-0 ODAC) snagged a victory from the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents (2-3, 1-0 NCAC) this afternoon, besting the visitors 2-1 in overtime.

The opening period was tightly contested, with each team registering two shots on goal. Sweet Briar earned a penalty corner early, but neither squad could capitalize on their offensive opportunities. Despite Sweet Briar's efforts, Washington & Jefferson struck first at 4:19, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Both defenses held strong for the remainder of the quarter, with Sweet Briar goalkeeper first-year Bella Cosden (Gettysburg, Pa.) making a crucial save to keep the deficit at one.

Sweet Briar responded vigorously in the second quarter, generating four penalty corners and four shots. Its offensive persistence paid off at 24:58, when junior Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season unassisted, bringing the game level at 1-1. Sweet Briar's defense stepped up as well, with several blocked shots and a defensive save from senior Carlina Christy (Denver, Pa.) thwarting Washington & Jefferson's advances. The evenly matched quarter ended with both teams recalibrating for the second half.

In the third quarter, both teams tightened their defenses and limited scoring chances. Sweet Briar managed two shots and a penalty corner, while Washington & Jefferson attempted one shot. The period featured disciplined defensive play, with Cosden making another save, keeping the game knotted at 1-1 after three quarters.

The final period saw Sweet Briar pressing to break the deadlock, although neither team managed a goal in regulation. Sweet Briar earned one penalty corner and two shots, matched by Washington & Jefferson's aggressive six penalty corners and five shots. Cosden came up with two crucial saves to keep her team in contention, and another defensive save by Christy denied a go-ahead goal to Washington & Jefferson. With the regulation ending in a tie, the game headed into overtime.

The extra period was intense, as both teams vied for the winning goal. Sweet Briar switched goalkeepers, with sophomore Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) entering the game. After a series of fouls and a penalty corner, Sweet Briar's persistence paid off at 66:20: Burdine netted her second goal of the match, this time assisted by Christy and sophomore Bella Perdue (Richmond, Va.). The timely strike gave Sweet Briar a memorable 2-1 victory in front of their home crowd.
