Field Hockey Earns Hard Fought Win Over Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (2-4, 0-0 ODAC) emerged victorious in a tightly contested match against Lancaster Bible Chargers (2-3, 0-0 UEC).

In the first quarter, Sweet Briar struck first as junior Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Ca.) scored just over two minutes into the match, staking an early lead. Lancaster Bible quickly responded less than half a minute later with a goal, leveling the score at 1-1. Both teams managed a handful of chances, but the defenses and goalkeeping limited further damage, ending the period tied.

The second quarter saw Sweet Briar gradually take control. After some back-and-forth play, Sweet Briar capitalized as E. Burdine found the net again midway through the frame, giving the Vixens a 2-1 advantage. Solid defensive play and saves helped the Vixens maintain this edge into halftime.

The third quarter tightened as Lancaster Bible fought back. Early substitutions and a string of penalty corners kept both teams active, Lancaster Bible managed to score a goal, tying the game at 2-2.

Sweet Briar saved its best for last in the fourth quarter. After applying sustained pressure, the Vixens finally broke through when junior Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.) scored unassisted with under six minutes to play, restoring the lead at 3-2. The Vixens' defense fended off a series of late penalty corners, and sophomore goalkeeper Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) made the critical saves needed to preserve the narrow win. Sweet Briar outshot Lancaster Bible 11-5 and held the edge in penalty corners during the later periods sealing a hard-fought victory in Lancaster.
