SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team kicked off its fall season as hosts of the annual Battle of the Blue Ridge tournament featuring the Guilford College Quakers, Shenandoah University Hornets and University of Lynchburg Hornets.
The doubles teams of Bovard/Guilarte and Minton/Venturi each won one match. Bovard/Guilarte took down Cahue/Smith of Randolph, 6-2, while Minton/Venturi earned a 6-1 defeat of Belnap/Sizemore of Guilford.
In singles play, junior
Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) went undefeated with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chandler Sizemore of Guilford and a 6-0, 6-2 win against Amy Rigg of Randolph.
Senior
Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) saw through a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Sophia Cahue of Randolph to get in the win column. Fellow senior
Atty Bestwick (Durham, N.C.) bested Natalie Thompson of Randolph, 8-5.
Highlights
- This marks the first taste of fall action for all the Vixens, including first-year Mallory Davis (Richmond, Va.), who contested her first collegiate action.
- Senior Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) battled in three sets in her opening singles match.

The Vixens will contest a series of fall scrimmages while preparing for the spring dual match season.
