Field Hockey Battles Against Oberlin

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-2, 0-0 ODAC) battled in a 1-0 loss to the Oberlin College Yeowomen (2-1, 0-0 NCAC) at Thayer Field today.

In the opening quarter, Sweet Briar's defense saw sustained pressure, holding Oberlin to just four shots while goalkeeper sophomore Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) turned away one on target, and defender senior Carlina Christy (Denver, Pa.) came up with a defensive save. Despite Oberlin's early penalty corners, Sweet Briar managed to limit clear scoring chances and conceded no goals.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern. Sweet Briar generated a bit more momentum, earning their first penalty corners of the match, but offensive opportunities remained scarce with only one shot taken by junior Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) late in the period, forcing Oberlin's goalkeeper into her only save of the game. Hart was tested more heavily, making three saves as Oberlin continued to press; however, Sweet Briar's defenders responded well, keeping the score knotted at zero at halftime.

Coming out of halftime, Sweet Briar's defense continued to bend but not break, facing four more shots and conceding one penalty corner. The decisive moment, though, came eight and a half minutes into the third period, when Oberlin through for the game's only goal, an unassisted strike at 38:06.

In the fourth quarter, the Vixens continued to battle defensively, limiting Oberlin to five shots and two penalty corners, while Hart made two more stops to complete her six-save performance. Disciplined defending was evident, with only eight fouls committed in each of the final three quarters and no major cards issued, while Oberlin was shown a green card late in the contest.

Highlights
  • Christy's one defensive save matches her career season-high total set in 2022 and 2024.
  • E. Burdine led the team in shots and shots on goal.
