Volleyball Falls at Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Sweet Briar College volleyball team (0-22, 0-11 ODAC) fell to the Shenandoah University Hornets (11-10, 5-4 ODAC) in three sets, 25-16, 25-4, 25-9, this afternoon at the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics & Events Center.

Sweet Briar battled back from an early 6-1 deficit in the opening set, using a pair of first-year Nadia Bingham (Chesapeake, Va.) kills and four Shenandoah errors to pull even at 7-7. After the hosts regained the lead, first-year Addison Garner (Elizabeth City, N.C.) put down two kills to help keep the Vixens within reach, with her second bringing the score to 15-9. Shenandoah later extended its advantage to 22-11 before Sweet Briar answered with three straight points, including back-to-back service aces from first-year Allie de Moet (Murfreesboro, Tenn.). Sophomore Rachael Hunt (Willow Spring, N.C.) added a late kill off a sophomore Yeriam Alyah Dávila Gerena (Rîo Grande, Puerto Rico) assist, but the hosts closed out the set, 25-16. Garner and Bingham finished the frame with two kills apiece, while sophomore Jaelyn Wood (Charlottesville, Va.) and first-year Kayla Rogucki (Fredericksburg, Va.) each registered four digs.

Shenandoah opened the second set with five consecutive points and continued to build its lead behind strong serving. First-year Tali Saunders (Elizabeth City, N.C.) recorded Sweet Briar's lone kill of the frame, converting a Dávila Gerena assist to make it 15-3. Rogucki tallied three digs and Hunt added one, but the hosts took the set, 25-4, to move ahead 2-0 in the match.

Wood gave Sweet Briar the first point of the third set with a kill from Dávila Gerena, and a Shenandoah service error later put the Vixens ahead, 2-1. The hosts responded with eight unanswered points before a setting error, and a Dávila Gerena service ace brought Sweet Briar within 9-4. Bingham added a kill midway through the frame, and de Moet put down Sweet Briar's final kill to make it 19-9. Shenandoah scored the remaining six points to secure the sweep. Bingham and Rogucki each contributed three digs in the final set, while first-year Amanda Mason (Sunrise, Fla.), Wood, and Dávila Gerena added two apiece.

Highlights
  • Dávila Gerena led the team with nine assists.
  • Rogucki recorded a career-high 10 digs.
