LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-9, 0-2 ODAC) fell to the University of Lynchburg Hornets (7-5, 2-0 ODAC) , 10-0, on this evening in the annual Beard Center on Aging Cup Game.
Lynchburg opened the scoring 24 seconds into the contest before the Hornets added goals at 6:31 and 9:13 marks, respectively. Junior goalkeeper
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) stopped a shot at 11:37 and denied one again at 13:45. Five seconds after Hart's second stop, junior
Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) turned away an attempt for a defensive save, helping keep the score at 3-0 through the end of the first quarter.
The hosts added two goals early in the second period, with tallies at 16:23 and at 19:01. Sophomore
Haley Littlefield (Albany Township, Maine) tested the Lynchburg goalkeeper at 20:01, but her shot was saved. Sweet Briar also earned its only penalty corner at that mark, with Shire taking the insertion.
Hart continued to anchor the Vixens' defense throughout the remainder of the half. She stopped shots at 21:29 and 22:22 before denying an attempt at 27:05 and at 29:17. Hart finished the second quarter with five saves as Sweet Briar entered halftime trailing 5-0.
In the third quarter, Hart saved an attempt at 32:40 before Lynchburg found the back of the cage at 32:43 and again at 34:22. Another goal was added at 35:32, and Hart turned away another shot at 38:40. A goal at 40:07 extended Lynchburg's lead to 9-0 heading into the final period.
Sweet Briar limited Lynchburg to one goal in the fourth quarter behind six saves from Hart. She denied attempts at 47:09 and 47:27, respectively, then stopped another at 52:21 and at 55:57. One final goal by the hosts was scored at 59:25 before Hart closed the game with two more saves against, including a stop on the final shot at 60:00.
