Lacrosse Falls in Conference Opener

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team (0-3, 0-1 ODAC) fell in tonight's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener to the University of Lynchburg Hornets (4-0, 1-0 ODAC) by a score of 20-0.

Lynchburg jumped out quickly in the first quarter, scoring 11 times, yet the Vixens generated early defensive stands and ground-ball wins as they tried to settle into the pace of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Geneva Seitz (Havre de Grace, Md.) opened her night with a save less than a minute into the game and added multiple ground-ball pickups, repeatedly interrupting Lynchburg's rhythm despite the Hornets' sustained first-period pressure. Sweet Briar also earned the first of its six draw controls in the opening quarter, as first-year Lyndsay Davis (Mocksville, N.C.) helped the hosts briefly break up Lynchburg's string of possessions.

In the second quarter, Sweet Briar's defense regrouped out of a timeout and forced several Hornet turnovers in their own end, highlighted by caused turnovers from sophomore Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) and first-year Hadyn Kuhns (Spotsylvania, Va.) as the Vixens continued to battle in front of their home crowd. Seitz added another save in the frame, and Sweet Briar matched Lynchburg on the ground for much of the period, collecting two ground balls to stay active around the crease and midfield. Davis once again secured a draw control to open the quarter, giving the Vixens a chance to build possession before Lynchburg's offense converted four more goals before halftime.

The third quarter saw Sweet Briar continue to contest draws and loose balls, with Davis winning yet another draw and the Vixens adding a ground ball from Shire as they tried to slow Lynchburg's attack. Shire's work in the midfield and defensive third, combined with strong support from the back line, helped limit Lynchburg's looks late in the frame and set the tone for a more settled final quarter

In the fourth, Sweet Briar produced its most sustained defensive stand of the evening, holding Lynchburg scoreless for the final 15 minutes. The Vixens repeatedly turned away clear attempts from the visitors, forcing multiple turnovers by the Hornets and stringing together a series of stops that included caused turnovers by Seitz and the defensive unit in front of her. Sweet Briar's ability to generate turnovers and extend defensive possessions in the fourth quarter underscored the group's improvement as the game progressed.

Highlights
  • Davis led the team with five draw controls and also picked up one ground ball.
  • Seitz totaled four ground balls to go along with her three saves.
