Softball Battles in Doubleheader at Greensboro

Greensboro, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (2-2, 0-0 ODAC) dropped both games in today's doubleheader against the Greensboro College Pride (5-1, 0-0 USA South). The Vixens fell 3-2 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

Game One
In the first inning, Greensboro was the first to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first with two walks and an RBI single to make the score 1-0.

After a scoreless second inning, Sweet Briar generated some offensive pressure in the top of the third when senior Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) singled to left and junior Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) followed with a bunt single, putting two aboard. Senior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) then laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced both runners to second and third before the end of the inning. Greensboro answered in the bottom half to push the Pride's advantage to 3–0.

Sweet Briar's breakthrough came in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) opened the frame by driving a double to left field, and pinch runner Junior Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) came on to run. Sophomore Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) singled to left to move Hite to third, then stole second; on the steal, Hite scored when the catcher committed an error, putting the Vixens on the board at 3–1. Hudson came through with a clutch RBI single to center, scoring Schmidt and trimming the deficit to 3–2.

The Vixens continued to battle in the remaining two innings, but the Pride's defense stayed strong to help seal the 3-2 final.

Game Two
Game two started similarly to game one, with Greensboro taking the lead 4-0 in the first two innings. Sweet Briar answered in the third with its first big scoring opportunity. After Kuleba drew a walk and junior Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) was hit by a pitch, both advanced on a wild pitch to put runners at second and third. Martin worked a walk to load the bases, and Hudson came through with a key hit to right field, driving in Staton and Kuleba as Martin advanced to third, cutting the deficit to 4–2.

After a scoreless two innings from both teams, the Pride extended their lead to 5-2. In the seventh, Sweet Briar mounted one final rally against Greensboro. First-year Lexie Aiman (Stafford, Va.) pinch hit and immediately drew a walk, then Hite was able to move Aiman into scoring position with a sacrifice hit. Aiman advanced to third on a wild pitch to bring the tying run on deck. Martin then delivered her second RBI of the day with a single to left, scoring Aiman to trim the lead to 5–3 before the end of the game.

Highlights
  • Martin led the team in hits for the day with a total of 4 hits.
  • Today marks the first match up between these two teams in Sweet Briar's history.
