Tennis Falls to Nationally-Ranked Kenyon

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (0-3, 0-1 ODAC battled the nationally -ranked No. 17 Kenyon College Owls (8-2, 2-0 NCAC) on Wednesday afternoon, falling 7-0 in a non-conference match that showcased several competitive stretches for the Vixens.

In doubles, the Vixens pushed the Owls at the No. 2 position, where junior Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) and senior Atty Bestwick (Durham, N.C.) won four games before ultimately dropping a 6-4 decision to Carling/Stolarsky. At the top spot, seniors Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) and Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) collected two games in a 6-2 setback to Komlodi/Shope, while the No. 3 duo of sophomore Ari Venturi (Richmond, Va.) and
Megan Vess (Goodview, Va.) fell 6-0 to Ackermann/Chappars as Kenyon secured the doubles point.

Kenyon carried its momentum into singles, but Sweet Briar continued to compete across the lineup. Guilarte and Bovard each grabbed early games at the top two flights before Kiara Komlodi and Maya Stolarsky closed out straight-set wins by identical 6-2, 6-1 margins. Minton bounced back in the second set at No. 3 singles, taking two games in a 6-0, 6-2 result against Elizabeth Ackermann. Venturi picked up a game in the first set at No. 5 in a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Maggie Shope, while first-year Gianna Guadagno completed the Sweet Briar lineup at No. 6 singles in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Madeline Chappars.

Highlights
  • Both Bovard and Minton took more games against the nationally-ranked Owls than when the two programs met last year.
  • Bovard has won at least one game in all singles sets contested so far this season.
