SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (9-9, 2-2 ODAC) swept today's doubleheader against the Guilford College Quakers (8-9-1, 0-2 ODAC); taking game one 4-0, and game two 12-4.
Game One
After five scoreless innings the Vixens offense erupted in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a single from junior
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) and a bunt from senior
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) that moved the runners into scoring position. First-year
Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.) doubled to center for two RBIs to score Hudson and Martin, junior
Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) followed with an RBI double to right to bring in Peterson. Junior
Jordan Dorrier Buckingham, Va.) added another RBI with a groundout that scored Taylor for the 4-0 lead.
Guilford's final chance in the seventh ended without a rally, as Sweet Briar closed out the win and Taylor finished the shutout.
Game Two
In the bottom of the first inning, Sweet Briar sent nine batters to the plate and scored six times to seize full control early. Martin opened with a walk, Hudson reached on a bunt single, and Peterson singled to load the bases before sophomore
Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) delivered the first big blow with a two-run single. Dorrier then followed with a two-run double. Sophomore
Leila Atienza (Jacksonville, N.C.) kept the inning moving with a single, and sophomore
Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) capped the rally with a two-run single that made the score 6-0.
Guilford answered in the second with its first run to cut the deficit to 6-1. Sweet Briar responded right away in the bottom of the inning, beginning with a single from Sawyers and a stolen base before Purvis knocked in a run with another single. Senior
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and sophomore
Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) both reached, and Martin added an RBI single to push the lead to 8-1. Sweet Briar came back with a small but important insurance run when Dorrier singled, Atienza reached on an error, and Purvis singled in Dorrier to make the score 9-3.
Guilford kept hanging around in the fourth, trimming the margin to 9-4. The Vixens answered with its final burst in the bottom of the inning, as Schmidt walked and stole second, Martin walked, and Hudson's bunt single loaded the bases. Peterson then drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Sawyers and Atienza both reached on a fielder's choice to plate Hudson and make it 12-4.
The Vixens were able to hold the Quakers in the top of the fifth to take the 12-4 win in five innings.
Highlights
- Purvis went three for four in game two with four RBI's
- The Vixen's 12-4 win in game two marks the largest margin of victory in history between the two programs.
