Softball Ends Non-Conference Action with a Win

STAUNTON, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-12, 3-3 ODAC) concluded non-conference action at the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels (6-19-1, 1-5 USA South), taking game one in six innings, 10-0, before falling in game two, 5-3.

Game One
Sweet Briar opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Junior Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) drew a walk, senior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) doubled her home and junior Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Vixens added three more in the second. After senior Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) singled and Martin reached, first-year Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.) came through with a two-run single, and Taylor later reached on an error that allowed another run to score, pushing the lead to 5-0.

In the third, Sweet Briar scored again without recording a hit in the frame. First-year Lexie Aiman (Stafford, Va.), running for Smith, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored when a throwing error extended the play, giving Sweet Briar a 6-0 advantage.

The fourth and fifth innings went quietly for both teams, as Sweet Briar was held scoreless and Mary Baldwin remained off the board.

Sweet Briar broke the game open in the sixth with four more runs. Sophomore Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score fellow sophomore Emily Cottingham (Chesterfield, Va.), Hudson added a sacrifice fly to bring home Martin, and junior Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) capped the inning with a two-run double that scored juniors Emma Staton (Buckingham, Va.) and Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.).

Mary Baldwin went down without scoring in the sixth, and the game ended there with Sweet Briar ahead 10-0.

Taylor was excellent in the circle for Sweet Briar, throwing six shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out 10 and walking four.

Game Two
After being held off the board through the first two innings of play, the Vixens broke through in the third. Peterson started the rally with an RBI single that brought home Martin, and Dorrier followed with an RBI single that scored

Peterson to tie the game at 2-2. Sweet Briar was shut out in the fourth and fifth, managing only a pair of hits in the fourth and none in the fifth.

In the seventh, Peterson singled, and then Dorrier delivered the final Sweet Briar run with an RBI double to center, scoring Peterson and cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Highlights
  • Taylor added 10 strikeouts to bring her conference-leading total to 101.
  • Four Vixens recorded two RBIs in game one.
  • Dorrier went a combined five-for-eight over the two games with five hits, four RBIs and two doubles.
