SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team (0-6, 0-1 ODAC) battled throughout but fell 16–0 to the Cedar Crest College Falcons (3-1, 0-0 UEC) on Friday afternoon at Meyer Field, with the Vixens' defensive unit and ride seeing the bulk of the action over four quarters.
Cedar Crest opened the scoring just 39 seconds in and built a 5–0 lead by the end of the first, but Sweet Briar's defensive effort showed early as sophomore goalkeeper
Geneva Seitz (Havre de Grace, Md.) turned away six first-quarter shots and the Vixens earned five ground balls in the opening frame. Sweet Briar generated its first offensive look on a free-position attempt late in the quarter, when first-year
Lyndsay Davis's (Mocksville, N.C.) shot sailed just wide at 3:24, and the defense closed the period by killing off multiple Cedar Crest possessions.
In the second quarter, Sweet Briar's back line continued to be tested, with Seitz adding four more saves to keep the game within reach as Cedar Crest extended its advantage. First-year
Somerlin Ford (Clarksburg, Md.) helped stabilize the clearing game with a ground-ball pickup at 10:05 before the Vixens moved the ball upfield, and the group collected seven ground balls in the period to limit second-chance looks. Late in the half, Sweet Briar earned another free-position opportunity, and defender sophomore
Elise Palazzo (Allentown, Pa.) forced Cedar Crest's goalkeeper into a save from the eight-meter, giving the hosts one of their best chances of the day.
Out of halftime, Sweet Briar produced one of its steadiest stretches, starting with a draw control win by Davis to open the third quarter. Palazzo followed with a blocked shot that disrupted Cedar Crest's early possession, while midfielders, senior
Liz Carr (Charlottesville, Va.) and a Falcon player traded caused turnovers and ground balls in the midfield scramble that defined much of the frame. The Vixens posted four third-quarter ground balls and two draw controls, highlighted by Davis's work on the circle and her four caused turnovers on the afternoon, as they repeatedly forced Cedar Crest into resets despite the visitors adding three more goals.
In the fourth, Sweet Briar continued to compete in the defensive third, sparked by Seitz's positioning and presence in the crease as she finished with 12 total saves and 21 ground balls credited to the Vixens by game's end. First-year
Beiry Bonilla (Manassas, Va.) generated a late fourth-quarter free-position attempt that went just wide, while sophomore
Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) and Seitz each collected key ground balls as Sweet Briar fought through a series of man-down situations following a yellow card to first-year
Caitlin Weaver (Wellford, S.C.). The Vixens' ride forced multiple failed clears by Cedar Crest, and the defense closed the game with another ground ball by Seitz in the final minute before time expired.
Highlights
- Davis led the team with two draw controls.
- Seitz and Davis both earned four caused turnovers.
