SALEM, VA – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-16, 3-7 ODAC) was bested by the Roanoke College Maroons (14-14, 6-6 ODAC) in today's doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 10-0.
Game One
Sweet Briar opened the game with a single from senior
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.), who then stole second and moved into scoring position, but the inning ended without a run after Roanoke escaped the jam. Roanoke struck first in the bottom half to make the score 1-0.
In the second inning, Sweet Briar answered with its best frame of the day. Junior
Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) doubled, sophomore
Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va) singled and stole second, and sophomore
Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) drove in the tying run with a groundout before junior
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) brought home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice bunt, putting Sweet Briar in front 2-1. Roanoke could not answer in the bottom of the inning, as Sweet Briar limited the hosts to one hit and no runs.
The third inning was quiet for Sweet Briar, with only first-year
Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.) reaching on a single before the inning ended. Roanoke tied the game in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-2.
Sweet Briar threatened in the fourth but was unable to plate a run. Roanoke then took control in the bottom half of the inning to push the Maroons ahead 4-2.
Sweet Briar showed resilience in the fifth. Junior
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) doubled, Hudson walked, and Peterson singled to load the bases, and after a fielder's choice and a hit-by-pitch, Hudson crossed the plate to trim the deficit to 4-3. Roanoke responded in the bottom half, restoring the two-run margin at 5-3.
The sixth inning came and went without a breakthrough for Sweet Briar, as Purvis opened the frame with a single, but the inning ended without a run.
In the sixth and seventh, Sweet Briar tried to produce a rally, but Roanoke's defense stayed strong, and the game ended 5-3.
Game Two
Sweet Briar's first inning began with Martin being hit by a pitch, and Hudson moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, but the inning ended without a run. Roanoke then seized control in the bottom half to take a 3-0 lead.
In the second and third innings, Roanoke kept the pressure on to stretch the lead to 10-0.
In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Emily Cottingham (Chesterfield, Va.) broke up the no-hitter with a single through the right side of the field. However, the Vixens were unable to capitalize, and the game ended with a score of 10-0.

- Nauful recorded a total of 7 putouts in game one.
