SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-18, 3-9 ODAC) hosted the Shenandoah University Hornets (24-6, 9-3 ODAC) for a Senior Day doubleheader this afternoon.
The Vixens fell in both games by scores of 11-5 and 1-5, respectively.
Game One
Sweet Briar got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After sophomore
Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) was hit by a pitch and fellow sophomore
Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) doubled, sophomore
Annie Purvis (Madison Heights, Va.) delivered a two-run single to bring both runners home and cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the second, Sweet Briar tied the game. Senior
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) led off with a triple, and junior
Ruby Hite (Clarksville, Va.) followed with an RBI triple to score her and make it 3-3.
Sweet Briar was held scoreless in the third, while Shenandoah briefly pulled back ahead.
The home team answered in the fourth as senior
Ilka-Marie Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) singled and came around on Hite's RBI single to bring Sweet Briar within 8-4.
The Vixens added another run in the fifth when Schmidt doubled, and junior
Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) singled her home to trim the margin to 9-5.
A two-run outing in the sixth and scoreless frames from Sweet Briar brought the game to an 11-5 close.
Game Two
Sweet Briar broke through in the third inning as junior
Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) drew a walk, senior
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) singled and first-year
Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.) delivered the team's only run with an
RBI double to left that brought Martin home and tied the game at 1-1.
The Hornets went on to score one run in the third and four in the sixth to take the 5-1 victory.
Highlights
- Both Hite and Schmidt were two-for-three in game one, with Hite recording two RBIs and Schmidt accounting for two runs.
- Junior Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) recorded three strikeouts in game two, while Peterson had the team's only extra-base hit in the second contest.
