Softball Closes out 2026 Regular Season on the Road at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (18-22, 7-13 ODAC) closed out the 2026 regular season on the road against the Averett University Cougars (24-16, 9-11 ODAC), falling by scores of 2-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two.

Game One
The first game of the day stayed tight throughout as both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings. Sweet Briar had its best chance early with a leadoff single from junior Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.) in the first, but the inning ended without a run after the next two hitters were retired.

In the fourth, senior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) drew a walk, and Sweet Briar benefited from a throwing error that moved a runner into scoring position, but the inning still ended scoreless.

In the sixth, senior Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) lined a single to right, giving Sweet Briar another baserunner, but the inning ended without a run.

Game Two
Sweet Briar fell 8-2 to Averett in game two, but the Vixens scored first and added a run in the final inning to stay in the game.

Sweet Briar struck first in the top of the first when Hudson walked, first-year Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.) doubled and junior Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) singled home Hudson for an RBI.

Sweet Briar was held scoreless until the seventh, when Martin singled, Peterson and Taylor followed with hits and junior Ciara Nauful (Forest, Va.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Martin and cut the deficit to 8-2.

Highlights
  • On top of six strikeouts in game one, Taylor led the Sweet Briar at the plate in game two with three hits and one RBI.
  • Martin totaled three hits and one run over both games.
