Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (14-14, 3-5 ODAC) dropped today's doubleheader against the University of Lynchburg Hornets (19-9, 8-0 ODAC) by scores of 12-6 in game one and 7-6 in game two.

Game One
Sweet Briar jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, then added a run in the sixth, but Lynchburg answered with a big first inning of its own and kept extending the margin on the way to a 12-6 win.

In the first, Sweet Briar opened the scoring when junior Ambyre Taylor (Arrington, Va.) grounded out to bring home fellow junior Jordan Martin (Wilmington, N.C.), then junior Jordan Dorrier (Buckingham, Va.) singled in senior Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.), sophomore Abi Sawyers (Matthews, N.C.) tripled in Dorrier and first-year Sophia Peterson (Ashland, Va.), and sophomore Madeline Schmidt (Fluvanna, Va.) followed with an RBI single to score Sawyers.

Sweet Briar did not score in the second, third, fourth, or fifth innings, though it kept putting runners aboard in several of those frames.

In the sixth, Sweet Briar broke through again when Peterson singled to center to drive in Martin and cut the deficit to 12-6. The final seventh inning went quietly for Sweet Briar, as the inning ended on an infield popup and a flyout after Schmidt reached on a single.

Game Two
Sweet Briar came up short in a 7-6 loss in game two, but the game featured a big third-inning rally and several strong individual offensive performances.

The third inning was Sweet Briar's breakthrough, as Peterson doubled in two runs to bring home Jordan Martin and first-year Lexie Aiman (Stafford, Va.). Sawyers followed with a three-run homer to left field, scoring Peterson and Hudson and putting Sweet Briar ahead 5-4.

In the fifth, Hudson delivered another big blow with a solo home run to left-center, extending the lead to 6-4.

Sweet Briar was unable to add on in the seventh, even though Sawyers tripled and Hudson reached on an error before a double play ended the inning. Lynchburg took the victory in the bottom of the inning with a three-run outing to end the game.

Highlights
  • Sawyers went a combined five-for-eight with five RBIs, two runs, two triples and one home run.
  • Hudson has now hit at least one home run in all four of her collegiate seasons of competition.
