SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College tennis team (2-8, 1-6 ODAC) was edged out by the Roanoke College Maroons (6-11, 2-7 ODAC), 4-3, this evening at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
Roanoke took the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, while Sweet Briar's top team of seniors
Lucia Bovard (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) and
Alex Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) earned the lone doubles win with a 6-4 result at No. 1.
The Vixens responded strongly in singles, taking three matches to nearly complete the comeback. Guilarte won a three-set, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, battle at No. 1 singles, junior
Maggie Minton (Wytheville, Va.) added a 7-5, 6-1 straight-set win at No. 3 and sophomore
Ari Venturi (Richmond, Va.) outlasted Morgan Tobey in three sets, 6-0, 1-6, 6-1, at No. 5. Roanoke's depth proved decisive, however, as it claimed the other three singles matches to secure the narrow team victory.
Highlights
- Guilarte, Minton and Venturi are all undefeated in career singles matches against the Maroons.
- Guilarte has also never dropped a doubles match to a Roanoke opponent.
