SWEET BRIAR, Va. - After thoughtful consideration, Sweet Briar College has made the difficult decision to discontinue its golf program.
This decision follows a comprehensive review of the athletic offerings, including roster sustainability, participation trends, and historical significance.
To maintain a strong and vibrant athletics program, the department must ensure that each sport can consistently support roster sizes. Sweet Briar's administration is constantly evaluating our recruiting strategies, athletic and riding opportunities, and academic programs to support excellent scholar-athletes, ensure fiscal responsibility, and maximize operational efficiencies. From time to time, these considerations may result in difficult decisions like these.
The challenges facing collegiate golf are not unique to Sweet Briar. Across the country, many institutions have experienced increasing difficulty recruiting student-athletes for golf as participation trends continue to evolve. The pool of prospective NCAA Division III golfers remains relatively small in the state and across the nation. In Virginia, only 8 of the 27 private liberal arts colleges in the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia have varsity-level golf programs.
This decision was not made lightly. We recognize and appreciate the commitment of the student-athletes, Coach Garnet Manley, and those who coached before him, alumnae, and supporters who have contributed to the golf program over the years. Their dedication, sportsmanship, and representation of Sweet Briar College have left a meaningful legacy, and we are grateful for their contributions to our athletics community.
