SWEET BRIAR, Va – The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-5, 0-0 ODAC) was bested under the lights this evening, 8-1, by the Meredith College Avenging Angels (2-2).
Meredith opened the scoring at 8:43, and Sweet Briar responded with a productive attacking stretch shortly afterward, earning three penalty corners between the 7:20 and 7:42 marks. The Avenging Angels' goalkeeper denied sophomore

Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
The Vixens continued to press throughout the opening quarter. Burdine had a shot blocked following Sweet Briar's fourth penalty corner of the period, but Meredith added a goal at 12:35 to take a 2–0 advantage into the second quarter.
Sweet Briar generated more pressure early in the second period. First-year
Liv Werner (Fredericksburg, Va.) inserted penalty corners at 20:08 and 20:15, and Burdine forced a defensive save by Meredith during the sequence. The Vixens earned another corner at 25:49 and put together a four-shot stretch: junior
Megan Newton (Jaffrey, N.H.) and Werner each registered shots on goal that were saved; senior
Gigi Hutman's (Bordentown, N.J.) attempt was blocked; and Burdine added another shot on frame. Meredith scored four goals in the quarter, however, and led 6–0 at halftime.
After the break, Sweet Briar earned consecutive penalty corners at 30:32 and 30:39, both initiated by Werner. Meredith added two goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 8–0.
The Vixens continued to compete in the fourth quarter and were rewarded with their goal in the 52nd minute. Following penalty corners by Werner at 49:56 and 51:07, Hutman tested the goalkeeper with a shot on goal, and Burdine added another saved attempt. Junior
Gianna Guadagno (Huntington Beach, Calif.) then found the back of the cage unassisted at 51:15 for her first goal of the season, putting Sweet Briar on the board.

- Junior Goalkeeper Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) totaled 13 saves, just one shy of her season high.
