SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar soccer team (0-3-3, 0-1 ODAC) fell to the No. 2 Washington and Lee University Generals (5-0, 1-0 ODAC) this evening at home by a score of 11-0.
In the first half Washington and Lee established possession early and tested Sweet Briar defense repeatedly during the opening minutes. First-year
Arianna Nguyen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) made three saves before the Generals broke through with two goals within the ninth minute to put Washington and Lee ahead 2-0. Nguyen continued to deny multiple shots on goal from the Generals throughout the first half to keep the game close. However, Washington and Lee were able to add four more goals late in the half to take the 6-0 lead into halftime.
During the second half Washington and Lee added two early goals to make the score 8-0. Despite the scoreline, Sweet Briar generated more attacking opportunities after halftime. Junior
Yadira Castrejon (Connelly Springs, N.C.) placed two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Washington and Lee goalkeeper. Sweet Briar also earned its lone corner kick of the match following Castrejon's second shot on target.
The Generals scored three more times after the hour mark to make the score 11-0. Sweet Briar goalkeeper sophomore
Kylee Nickerson (Waterford, Mich.) entered in the 79th minute and stopped penalty kick from the Generals, helping keep Washington and Lee off the board for the remainder of the match. The Generals finished with an 11-0 win.
