Soccer Battles Regent in First Road Contest

NORFOLK, Va. -  The Sweet Briar College soccer team (0-2, 0-0 ODAC) continued to create chances throughout Saturday's match at the Regent University Royals (1-1, 0-0 C2C), but a three-goal Regent stretch across the first 12 minutes of the second half proved decisive in a 3-1 loss.

Sweet Briar generated early pressure and held a 7-3 advantage in first-half shots. Senior Emily Michel (Centennial, Colo.) fired wide in the opening minute before fellow senior Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) sent a shot high in the eighth minute. Junior Yadira Castrejon (Connelly Springs, N.C.) forced the Regent goalkeeper into a save in the 17th minute, and junior Electra McPherson (Madison Heights, Va.) followed with another shot on target at 19:48.

Regent broke through in the 27th minute, and first-year Arianna Nguyen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) responded with a save less than three minutes later, while Sweet Briar continued to press before halftime. Sophomore Elena Fomin (Middlesex County, Va.) put a shot on goal in the 40th minute, and Diaz added two more attempts before earning a corner kick in the 42nd minute. The Vixens entered the break trailing just 1-0 despite controlling the shot count.

Sweet Briar opened the second half with a corner kick by sophomore Sadie Swart (Bowie, Md.) just over a minute after play resumed. Regent, however, extended its advantage at 46:47 and added a third goal at 56:33.

The Vixens continued to fight back. Diaz earned a penalty kick in the 60th minute, but the Royals goalie made the save to preserve Regent's three-goal lead. First-year Madeline Shrader (Greensburg, Ind.) entered in goal at the 67:52 mark and made two late saves.

Sweet Briar found the scoresheet in the 73rd minute as Swart converted her lone shot on goal to cut the margin to 3-1. Michel added a late shot wide, and Diaz delivered Sweet Briar's fourth corner kick of the afternoon in the 86th minute, but the Vixens could not find another breakthrough before the final whistle.
